G'day Jack
Looking at Cossums part 2 book, 1900 to 1930 this badge is shown as being from the 1912 to 1918 period, the hat badge is shown as rare and the collar as $200 and this was at 1983 when the book was published. I dont have one and have not seen one that I know of. I hope that this helps. Regards Phil. |
19th Light Horse Badge
There was another 19th Light Horse unit in the 1930's which was never issued a regimental badge. This was the 19th Yarrowee Light Horse Regiment of northern Victoria.
The 1930's 19th Light Horse Regiment was linked with the 4th to become 4th/19th Light Horse (not to be confused with the post 1948 unit 4/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse). The unit was unlinked and at a separate time linked with the 17th Light Horse Regiment to become 17th/19th Light Horse Regiment only to be come a regiment in their own right again about the start of the 2nd World War. Cossum in his 1930-1942 badge book confirms no 19th LH badge issued and a copy of the 1938 and 1942 reprint of Army booklet 'Vocabulary of Military necessaries' lists all badges on issue. It mentions 19th Light Horse badge but no price indicating no issue. By the way, a regimental badge was valued in the Vocab book at approx. 1 shilling and sixpence. The most expensive Light Horse badge of the period was the 20th Light Horse VMR badge and known later in the armoured corps as the Wall Plaque cos of its size, was valued at 2 shillings in 1938. I served with 4/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse and 8/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles for 22 years in the 1980's and 1990's and have a great passion for Aussie military history. Hope this gives some clarity to your quest. |

I was googling through the net to see if I could find something about the 1930-42 badge of the 9th Light Horse (Yarrowee Light Horse), when I stumbled in here. This thread seems to settle that, thanks. My question: what would the members of this unit have worn when there was no regimental hat dress badge (or did they not wear hat dresses ;))? |

Don't suppose you have seen any VMR stable belts around? Still chasing one. Will drop you an email soon. Mick |

BTW Australian badges are apparently categorised as belonging to periods. One of thoe periods is "1930-1942". But the Citizens Force units (Light Horse and Infantry) were raised 1921/2. I assume that they also wore the Rising Sun before regimental badges were created. Correct? (I am realy a starter on Australian military history and regimental lineages). |
19 LH Regt
Quote:
With brief exception 19 LH Regt did not exist in any way, shape or form during the period 1929-1941, thus no badges. On 1 September 1933 17/19 LH Regt was redesignated 17 LH Regt and 19 LH Regt was reconstituted as 19 LH AC Regt (AAO 193/1933) in the Wimmera area but after 8 months was redesignated 1 AC Regt effective 1 May 1934 (AAO 81/1934). By the same AAO, 17 LH Regt was redesignated 17/19 LH Regt. Possibly there was a design submitted for approval by 2 Cav Div for 19 LH AC Regt during this time but events would have been overtaken by the change in designation. 17/19 LH Regt was redesignated 17 LH(MG) Regt on 1 October 1936 (AAO 83/1937) and by the same AAO 4 LH Regt was renumbered 4/19 LH Regt. 4/19 LH Regt was redesignated 4 LH Regt on 1 August 1939, 13 LH Regt was redesignated 13/19 LH Regt on the same date. Note that these were simply changes in unit designation and there was no change in recruiting areas or exchange of unit personnel. 13/19 LH Regt – redesignated 13 LH Regt on 6 November 1940. 19 MG Regt was raised as a new unit with RHQ at Horsham (I think) on 3 December 1940. This information comes from the original AAOs and the Gradation Lists of Officers of the Australian Military Forces for dates of postings of officers to and from these regiments, also Allied Land Forces Postings Order No 8/1942 issued with GOs of 31 Jul 42, which gives an effective date for the unlinking of 13/19 LH Regt as 30 August 1940. On 7 January 1941 the Military Board directed that no further supply of regimental badges, other than for the Permanent Forces, was to be made (MB (MGO) memo 1038 of 7 Jan 41). This would ensure that any proposed design for the new 19 MG Regt would have been rejected. Keith |
Very extensive research. Many thanks.
It looks as if a lot of effort was put in keeping the perpetuation of the 19th LH alive. |
I seem to remember that there was a 1912-18 19th LH hat badge in Bob Gray's collection, if so it is now in the Sth Aust army museum. An old Sydney collector named Al Cansdell showed me a collar badge, and when he died more than 20 years ago his badges were sold by IS Wright. These are the only ones I have ever seen.
