Hello all,

I’m curious about the use of havelocks (neck curtains) during WWI. Has there been any published analysis of this ancillary headgear? Were they an issue item or made locally/field expedient? Thanks in advance!

No idea, but they were wore in the Boer War.

G'day Mark

Aussie diggers on Gallipoli who only had a peaked cap, ie no slouch hat , often used a curtain attached to the back of the cap to keep the sun off the back of their necks. However I don't know if they were an issued item or something that the men came up with in the field.

Regards

Phil.
