British DFC to an American Pilot
 

Can anyone suggest a possible research route or researcher who might be able to establish from US records if a named US pilot was awarded a British DFC?

I am aware of a book on DFC awards - perhaps someone can enlighten me on its title - which I checked many years ago but as an honorary award I don't think it was included.

Any suggestions/contacts welcome.

If the pilot's name is known, then a search of the London Gazette may establish the award.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not an Eagle Squadron man. Awards to overseas personnel did not usually appear in the LG as far as I am aware.

Thanks for the DFC book details but he's not in there either.

While there are probably instances in which even awards to British and Commonwealth personnel are missing from the LG, all decorations (even those awarded to foreigners) are supposed to be gazetted. Was the individual supposedly awarded the decoration while serving in the RAF? Are you at liberty to provide the name?.

In the case of pers serving in British and Commonwealth forces being awarded a foreign decoration. permission from the King was gazetted individually. For Americans who were awarded foreign decorations, awards and even badges, they needed the consent of Congress (it has to do with the wording of their Constitution). During WW2 (and in some other conflicts), a blanket authority to accept and wear any and all "decorations, orders, medals, and emblems tendered them by governments of cobelligerent nations or other American republics" was implemented by Public Law 77-671 in 1942 and updated by Public Law 80-314 in 1947.
