'S6' British Slip on title?
Hello,
I have just picked up a modern slip on full lenght shoulder title, which came with a Black Watch tartan Slip on title. However the title I am trying to ID is on an Olive coloured backing and consists of a Blue shield [similar in shape to the Route 66 type US road sign] which has S6 on it. It appears to have a British soldier's name and no on it, so does anyone know what it is? Regards |

Thank you both for your excellebt replies. It's good that it ties in with the BW one, as the BW recruits train there now.
We had a similar thing when I was Training at Woolwich as a Gunner. We wore a slip on two coloured band around our shoulder starpes with a RA collarbadge attached. Each Troop had their own colours. The title I have is the same as the 'S' one above, but with the addition of the number '6', does that help date it? Many thanks for your time |

I think 'Letter Only' is Pre 2004 with some newer slides having the Platoon Numbers as well, as more than one platoon is in training at any one time.
Other than N on Maroon which is Normandy Platoon of Parachute Company. |

Mike, Yes seems likely and there are or were many more around:
Falaise, Gallipoli, Imphal, Lucknow, Arnhem (Para), Rhine (Para) |

A few more:
Minden, Hook, Java, Oudna (Para), Tamera (Para) Extra info: Although most of these platoon titles seem to be battle Honours to the Regiments whose soldiers train at ITC Catterick, "Hook" is not "The Hook" Korean honour but is named after Henry Hook VC of the 24th Foot won at Rourke's Drift in 1879. The "Route 66" shield shape is that used on the School of Infantry TRF. |
At the moment I cannot reconcile the 'Battles' titles to all of the companies, which are since the re-org:
1st Infantry Training Battalion is responsible for training soldiers destined to join the regiments of the Queen's Division, Prince of Wales' Division, the Royal Irish Regiment and The Rifles, King's Division and the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The 1st Battalion has five training companies: Queen's Division Company Prince of Wales's Division Company Rifles Training Company King's Division Company Scots Division Company 2nd Infantry Training Battalion has responsibility for training recruits who will join one of the regiments of the Guards Division, the Parachute Regiment and the Brigade of Gurkhas. In addition, 2 ITB provides training for the army's airborne role through its 'P' Company courses and for training junior soldiers from ATR Bassingbourn and TA Infantrymen. It has four Training Companies, Anzio Company Guards Division Company (Perhaps has Platoon names like Para Coy?) Parachute Regiment Training Company (Maroon Slides) Gurkha Company (As far as I know do not wear slides) The 3rd Battalion (ITC) ITC Catterick's primary support unit, dealing with logistic and medical support. It also serves as the parent unit for those soldiers who are undergoing rehabilitation from injury, or who are in the process of being discharged. However, the 3rd Battalion also has a training role, with responsibility for some specialist training on the CIC (such as signalling), and for the ceremonial aspects of infantry duties. The 3rd Battalion is structured to provide maximim support throughout the ITC and consists of the following departments: Headquarter (HQ) Company. Hook VC Company (discharged soldiers). Williams Company (rehabilitation). Army School of Ceremonial. Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming. Army Primary Health Care. Quartermasters (QMs) Department. G7 Training. 400 Troop, Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) I think that the Red & Blue Slides must be 1 & 2 Company? But if so how does that place Hook Company with a Blue Slide? Next time I am up in Catterick I will ask! |
Thanks for all of this information. I did not realise that they now had such a complexed system of badges for recruit training! What an interesting thread. If you would like, I could post a photo of the slide?

Just to add to this old thread. Here are some of my slip ons.
I have also recorded K2 K3 K4 K6 K7 K8 (King's Div) L1 L2 L3 L4 L5 (Light Div) 16 17 18 19 20 21 0N GREEN SHIELD S3 on Light Blue shield N T ON MAROON SHIELD S4 on its own below is definitely on a purple shield and not a faded blue but I haven't seen any others on purple. The three Gurkha items may be from the Gurkha platoon but I haven't seen any evidence for this as yet. Also note the two different shades of Blue on the second and third photos. Could the "S" and a number stand for Scottish Division if K is for Kings and Q is for Queens and L is for Light? Cheers Sean |

Here are few more letter and number combinations:
There are variations in the blue shields - not sure if this is manufacture or laundry! Tim |
Thanks for that Tim, I too thought manufacturers variation. Do you think the S and a number is for the Scottish Division platoons?
Cheers Sean |
In post 9 reference is made to junior soldiers from ATR Bassingbourn, is there an ATR Bassingbourn nowadays?
