Army Order 10 of January 1902
I'm trying to find a scan of the above Army Order (and any subsequent amendments) as I'm told it relates to the wearing of collar badges upon khaki Service Dress.

Stephen, I think I have copied the information rather than having made a scan / 'photo- but I'll check.
I was at TNA the other day ! so probably won't be there for a while !

Here is the order as published in The Army List 1902. Apologies for the scan quality it is the best I can do at the moment it should hopefully be legible enough for you.

You need to look at Appendix A (page 1555 paragraph 2) where it is instructed that collar badges are not to be worn. This is scan 4 attached, scan 3 includes shoulder title details.

I should have added that I do not have a good knowledge of any subsequent amendments. I shall look into what I do have later and get back to you.

I have notes in my files that AOs 40 & 251 of 1902 also related to Service Dress but no corroboration.

I have not come across an on-line index or archive of AOs and for the most part rely on the hit and miss availability of digitized copies of Army Orders and WO Circular Letters on-line.

Stephen - John, I have these snippets from AO 40/1902

Officers Service Dress was established by Army Order 40/1902. The badge worn ‘On the collar of the Service dress jacket’ was described as ‘The present pattern field cap badge, or the present pattern collar badges,* but in brown bronze.’
Issued as a Special Army Order, dated 17th January, 1902, p 1423. The * footnote reads ‘In cases where the field cap badge cannot be used.’

The Army Order establishing Officers Service Dress, 40/1902, defined that to be worn ‘On the felt hat’ as ‘The present pattern helmet plate centre within a gilt or gilding metal ring, inscribed with the name of the regiment.’
Issued as a Special Army Order, dated 17th January, 1902, p1423.

Further to my previous enquiries I now realise that I have no knowledge of when helmet plate centres ceased to be used on tropical headdress such as pith hats, Wolseley helmets etc. I make the presumption it was around the Great War but...

Stephen, I know that officer's HPCs were authorised for wear on the FSH in 1903 - and I think there is note for ORs too - I'll check later.
However, nobody has seen a photograph of these things in use ! David Linaker thought that the whole thing was abandoned for some reason.

In 1906 an Indian order stated that metal badges were not to be worn on FSH. My own view is that they were made and stocked in depots but for some reason they were never actually used - distance to India, regtl preference - who knows?
