Hello Australia,

I find the Australian lineage-numbering system an absolute nightmare.
I collect uniform & badge images (cannot afford the real thing any more!). The 'collection' is stored on CDs & the index is updated on the computer.

The Citizen's Military Force all changed after the First World War & the numbering reflected the AIF battalions, am I right? But I have a number of post 1920 infantry regiments that I cannot link to their previous CMF units, if they had any.

They are;
13th Maitland Rgt
22nd Richmond Rgt
33rd New England Rgt
34th Illawara Rgt
35th Newcastle's Own Rgt
36th St George's English Rifle Rgt
37th Henty Rgt
44th Western Australia Rifles
45th St George Rgt
49th Stanley Rgt
52nd Gippsland Rgt
53rd West Sydney Rgt
55th New South Wales Rgifle Rgt
60th Heidelburg Rgt

I also have CMF regiments that stop in 1914, so I am hoping that you might be able to link them together.

If someone has the time during the cold lonely Australian winter to answer my query I would be very grateful.

Hello Retlaw, some informations on your photograph of "Australian" badges.
1st line, #1, looks like a Princess Patricia's Canadian light Infantry collar.
2nd line, #5, Royal Malta Regiment.
4th line, #4, Governor General's Foot Guards,Canada
" " , #7, looks like the cap badge of the Belgian Army WW2

Nice badges! The Pacific Islands Regiment badge was worn by the PNG Soldiers and their Australian NCOs and Officers.

Many thanks for the information, just stuck them on a card,
the only ones I took notice of were the odds and sods at the bottom.
I've put 1-1 and 4-4 with the Canadians

Hi Alan,

I would strongly recommend a book called "Lineage of the Australian Army" by Alfred Fesberg. It was published around the early 1970s and will cover the lineage of the above mentioned regiments.

The militia units went through many different redesignations over the years especially either side of World War 1. And to make it worse, units were linked and de-linked as well - a real bowl of spaghetti at times!

The CMF was still in existence during WW1 and continued until 1918.

The AIF Battalions were all disbanded around 1919 or so and their battle honours were than inherited by the militia battalions (and Light Horse Regiments) that were formed during the 1920s and 1930s.

Eg the 13th Battalion (Maitland Regiment) would have inherited the battle honours of the 13th Battalion AIF. The CMF regiments were generally formed in the same state that the AIF Battalions were raised.

eg 13th Battalion AIF was raised in New South Wales and so was the 13th Battalion (Maitland Regiment).
