List of Jedburgh officers? Force 136

2 Attachment(s)
As a follow on from the SF Jed wing thread below. Received the lot, and it may be that i can try and ID the original owner,
Yorkshire Dragoons buttons. Majors pip. MID on war medal. Burma star so poss FORCE 136
Indian style Brit para wings.
Also a return to if lost. That could be anyone, not necessarily the recipient.
Would be nice to try and source a possible owner. Possible E.B. Vivian. Sadly cant make out the address.
Therefore, are there any lists of Brit officers who served as SF Jeds?
Thanks in advanceAttachment 188637

Those could equally be Int Corps buttons. That would help focus the search. Mike

Check out Brigadier John Alan VIVIAN.

Just to confirm Mike's view, they ARE Intelligence Corps buttons, not Yorkshire Dragoons.

Looks like Camborne (just south-west of Redruth, Cornwall) if that helps?

All the best

Jon, there is a good book on the Jedburghs, with an appendix that lists the personnel who served on each Jed mission. It is "The Jedburghs: The Secret History of Special Forces in France 1944," by Lt. Col. Will Irwin (US Army Ret.), published in 2005 by Public Affairs LLC of New York.

The SF wing also was worn by American members of OSS Operational Groups (OG’s) in the European theatre of operations, and OSS personnel attached to US First, Third and Seventh Armies. The wing also found its way into the hands of US, RAF and Commonwealth pilots and aircrew in England who flew support missions for OSS and SOE operations.

Les Hughes wrote a couple of excellent articles on the SF wing in the late 1980’s/mid-1990’s for The Trading Post magazine, the publication of the American Society of Military Insignia Collectors (ASMIC). Until Les publishes a long-planned book on OSS uniforms and insignia, his articles are the standard references among OSS collectors.

More later, hope that helps.

Best regards,
Donovan

The original article referred to above appeared in the July-September 1988 of the Trading Post, p.4-15. It sparked some debate regarding authentic variations over the following months. Then, in the April-June 1993 issue, Les published an article entitled "Insignia of the OSS" (p.2-19), which touched on the Special Force wing again.

Here is a documented example of the wartime Special Force wing.

The Special Force Wings may possibly be locally/field made. If the grouping is all to one man he could have served with Force 136, the Burma Star being the only Campaign medal. I have not seen this pattern of Wing before and the only examples I know of, that are 100% from members of Force 136, are shown in the attached images. The original Jedburgh SF Wing, previously illustrated by dobw, was worn by Jedburghs who served in the European Theater and trained at Milton Hall, also where it was issued. There was a view, by the veterans, that only those who were at Milton Hall, and subsequently served in Force 136, could be truly entitled Jedburghs. Those that served solely with Force 136 were not thought of as Jedburghs by them. If a list of names of Force 136 Officers can be located, then hopefully E.B.Vivien will be one of them. Kind regards, Clive.

I am intrigued by the statement that "the Wing (SF) also found its way into the hands of US, RAF and Commonwealth pilots and aircrew in England who flew support missions for OSS and SOE Operations". Just wonder where this came from? I have never seen any evidence of this, nor any period images to support this either. Kind regards, Clive.

I don't want to hijack Jon's thread, Clive. If you'd like to start a separate thread on the SF wing, or if you'd like to PM me, I'll explain the references drawn from Les Hughes' articles.

Best regards,
Donovan

As your request Donovan I will start another thread on the Special Force Wing, so that you can address my questioning your statement regarding the use of the SF Wing by US, RAF and Commonwealth pilots and aircrew in England who flew support missions for OSS and SOE Operations. All the best, Clive.

Appendix of names in book.

Thanks Donovan
Do you happen to have that book with a list of all Jeds? Is there a VIVIAN listed at all mate?

It is very unlikely that the owner of this grouping was a Jedburgh, as I commented on previously, not having a Campaign medal for previous service in Europe. Service with Force 136 is a possibility, but I am unsure if there is a listing of all those that served with them. It will be very difficult to try to establish who the grouping belonged to, without history and provenance, there is not really sufficient information to go on. Regards, Clive.
