Women's Volunteer Reserve

An unlikely source - the National Trust magazine for Spring 2018 - provides information on the property at Mount Steward, Count Down, formerly the home of Edith, Lady Londonderry (aka Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart). While acting Colonel in Chief of the Women's Volunteer Reserve she formed a breakaway organisation - the Women's Legion - in 1915. By 1918 the Women's Legion was providing female cooks for the military, ambulance drivers, clerks and canteen workers. Portraits, medals and her Women's Legion uniform are on display at Mount Stewart.

The January 2017 edition of the The Formation Sign Journal of the Military Heraldry Society included a three page article on the Women's Legion and included some nice illustrations of its uniform and badges.

Details of how to join can be found at www.militaryheraldrysociety.com.

Thanks for posting the link, A fascinating display of WL badges from a contemporary frame so the detailed descriptions are correct.

Thanks for posting the link as it brings back a lot of memories. I remember quite clearly these being on exhibition at the IWM a number of years ago, and was sadly dismayed when I took a friend along to see them, only to find that they had vanished from the general display.

Excellent,

Zob.
