There is a reprint by Ray Westlake of " Formation and other Signs" by V.Wheeler-Holohan but the signs are shown by black and white drawings.

The Osprey book by Mike Chappell mentioned above is cheaper and in my opinion more readable.

Why not join the Military Heraldry Society if you have an interest in Div signs ?

If you need anything on Australia for WW1 then there is a brilliant book by Keith Glide. If you want the full details let me know and I will look it up as have a copy at home. Also New Zealand Army Distinguishing Patches 1911-1991 has a comprehensive listing and illustrations of their cloth formation signs (about 1500 illustrations of Kiwi patches). By Thomas and Lord.

Army Corps Div. Signs

I have two sets totaling 150 of John Player cigarette cards titled Army corps Divisional signs, 1914-19118. All in colour. Interestingly, two of the cards show the signs for the Euphrates Defenses and the 6th Indian Cavalry Bde. which were respectively a black Swastika on a blue square and a white Swastika on a green square. Anyone needing help in this area is welcome to ask for a scan of any particular sign. Best regards, David J.

Sounds like the set I have linked to above. If you click on the images twice the image fills the screen. The reverse is also available if you click >. Cheers, Paul.

Hello Paul (WARDOG), Yes, that's the same set. I should have followed your link before I posted. Still don't have that much savvy where computers are concerned. Your gallery is a wonderful reference, I wouldn't know how to do that! Best regards, David J.

Hi David. Not my site just a link. Very good site though for general referance on a huge amount of subjects! Best regards, Paul.

I'm a bit worried about the 'historical notes'. Firstly I believe that the set was published in about 1925. I don't know much about the subject generally but the 41st Div (which I've been studying) certainly had those symbols in the 1st WW and was disbanded soon after !!!

wardog 28-01-10 04:50 PM

I've not compared the card reverse notes with any other source so unable to say if the write up is correct. Published not that long after the The Great War in the 1920's as you say. I don't think i've grasped what you think is incorrect about the WWI 41st Division card? Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul, if you click on it is says c1920-1939 ! whereas I think the set is labelled divisional badges 1914-1919 !
But I don't deny it's a useful album. Julian

NYPL Cigarette Cards

The New York Public Library digital collection is a wonderful site & in this particular case, the cigarette card sets are from all over the world, mainly from the UK.

It's taken them over six years to get to the letter K !! They are downloaded a bit like the Queen's honours lists, in big batches twice a year.

Not too much emphasis should be put on the labelling by the library - very many of them are totally incorrect.
