'N' and Broad Arrow Mark

Hi,

Over the years I've come across the mark of an 'N' with a broad arrow on cutlery and flatware:

The Elkington fork (top left mark) bears a date letter of 1852.

Can someone please enlighten me to the significance of the mark?

Could be "N" for Navy, some early Naval small arms have a similar arrow and an N stamped in various places.

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for your thoughts. Navy is what spung to mind with me, but I had thought it more likely to be marked 'RN', but I was not aware that Naval small arms were marked in that way.

Thanks again.

Hi Trev,

'N' is normally for Navy. Although I haven't seen such a nice or elaborate 'N' as this before but I guess it's on lovely cutlery, so that could explain it.

Here is a photograph of the ⩚N on my rifle, circa 1914 (along with No4SC)

Cheerio,

Roy

Hi Roy,

Thanks for confirming Rob's thoughts. Navy it is.

Thanks again.

Trev.
